year 2 sem 1
Thursday, 29 November 2018 || 5:07 pm
three semesters into university and i'm not gonna lie, the semesters get tougher and tougher. i just finished my one and only finals of the sem yesterday, and am pretty free for now, though i told myself that i wanted to dance and/or study korean. this sem had been a pretty hectic sem. there were a ton of meetings, content to memorise, and sleepless nights, and i'm so glad it's over now. i guess i just have to worry about the grades now... and make up my mind which module i want to su. sigh. but here's the mods that i took this past sem and my honest opinion about them.
1. ML0001 ABSOLUTE BASICS FOR CAREER (GER-CORE)
1 AU online module, basically go through all the online lecture videos, they make you take a Harrison's test or something, and create a resume for yourself, and you're all good. tried and tested, can be completed within one week.
2. HY0001 ETHICS & MORAL REASONING (GER-CORE)
another 1 AU online module but even more things to do because you have to write a reflection piece using the theories, and then respond to someone else's reflection piece, but still doable within a week. the online videos for this mod are generally longer than for the career mod though.
3. CS2008 FUNDAMENTALS OF RESEARCH (MAJOR-PE)
two hours of lecture and one hour of tutorial weekly. honestly the timings for this mod were no-go because lecture was after lunch time and tutorials were early in the morning. this was like media law 2.0 which i did not really enjoy but i tried to keep myself awake and attentive during lessons because i know i could not mess this up like how i messed medlaw up. lectures would be going through content and tutorials would be going through tutorial worksheets which is something like a case study. there are midterms and final terms which form the bulk of the assessment, and others include class part, online discussion (ye you must go do them), as well as two reflection papers.
4. CS2058 INTEGRATED MARKETING COMMUNICATION (MAJOR-PE)
apparently there are two slots for imc taught by two different profs and what you learn in these two lessons are totally different. but we learnt about communication objectives and planning and budget and all those things and at the end of the semester we had to pitch a campaign. so basically the weekly three hour lectures include going through content and discussing case studies, then you will have to include these content into your presentation for the pitch and report and everything. if im not wrong the bulk of the assessment goes to the report and the pitch, and we have midterms and final terms as well, mcq and short answered/essay questions. we will also have to post "marketing in our every day lives" and analyse the marketing approach used by companies, it counts towards our grades so have to be consistent!!
5. HL8001 MADNESS IN LITERATURE & FILM (GERPE-LA)
this mod is like quite dark but also very interesting and the lecturer is really really nice!! i am guilty of not attending all the lectures... but weekly three hour lectures on a monday morning is when ms wright will go through the content of the films and texts which will be used for our coursework essay (50%) and finals (50%). sorry this is the only mod that i'm confident of the percentage for assessment cos its only these two. so basically coursework essay is like the midterms, and then finals at the end of the semester. though i took lit in jc, it has been a long time since i wrote an essay in a limited time and i should say i was quite stressed for finals and had to keep reminding myself to analyse instead of vomiting content out!!! but the content for the films and text are really interesting! would actually take it again if i could!
6. CS2025 IMAGE & SOUND PRODUCTION (UE)
this mod is actually a gateway mod for the broadcast specialisation but i took it as ue to expose myself and learn new things... it was a struggle. the timing for this mod was one hour of lecture which is usually spent on watching sample films and criticising or analysing them, and two hour tutorial which are more hands-on where we really try to use the camera and edit and stuff. there are midterms and final term papers for this mod, on top of the three videos you have to produce - a tvc, a narrative, and a documentary. i don't know if this will change in the semesters to come. i felt that this mod was time-consuming because we had to squeeze out time on top of our three hour contact time with the prof to plan, to shoot, to edit and stuff. for the last film, my group stayed in school till almost 2am and pulled an all-nighter to try to finish up the documentary. i did learn some things, though i don't think i know how to use a p2 camera still...
7. LK9002 KOREAN LANGUAGE LEVEL 2 (UE)
was a tough mod but quite fun. i registered for this module alone but thank God there were people i know taking this mod and in the same class as me as well. there are listening tests and written tests for both mid term and final term, and there will be a pair presentation at the end of the semester as well. lots of new grammar and vocab for this semester which i really struggled with, and most of the time in class was spent trying to decipher what our prof was trying to say... i still don't know if i should su this. but really a lot more effort to put in two korean 2 as compared to korean 1 which was really basic.
17AUs cleared this semester! now for some healing time..
till next time x
almost there

and as i am able to see the end of the semester soon (we just left finals and i only have one this wednesday), i thought i could use the opportunity to bring this blog back to life. this semester had been insane, and i am aware that i have said this for the previous semester as well. but the first semester of year 2 had been a roller coaster ride. and i think it may be because of the broadcast module that i took - thank God we are done with it now. i've been kept really busy with the amount of submissions and deadlines to meet on the week before recess week and the last two weeks of the semester, and i'm finally done with all my modules except one, the literature mod. at the end of week 14, i remember just laying in bed at home and feeling so relieved that the end is near. i know i should read my texts and watch my film to study for my finals but i get so distracted so easily and i just can't seem to concentrate and this is stressing me out. another update for this semester is that i actually joined a cca. mj hip hop. i finally got the courage to go but i still feel so intimidated by all the dancers who are so experienced there. but i'm glad i actually went for camp and met melissa - and we've been writing our letters to each other since then till the end of the semester. i'm not quite sure if i will continue to be in this cca for the rest of my time in uni, but we'll see how it goes. also, i may or may not be going to korea for exchange next sem. i'm still waiting for a reply from the host uni side and i will still need to wait to see if the mods that i want to take will be taught in english. honestly this exchange thing is stressing me out as well but leave it all to God. i'll probably update more after finals about the modules and stuff. and i think i'll be going to jb this thursday for some therapy!!!!! on top of the two hall activities that i signed up for, uniqkidz and night cycling, i hope i will be able to learn a new choreography this winter break as well. for now, time to force myself to prep for finals. let's go!!
till next time x
